Shadowing Opportunities
Shadowing a physician is one of the best ways to explore what a career in medicine is really like. By observing how doctors interact with patients, collaborate with nurses and staff, and make clinical decisions, students gain firsthand insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of healthcare professionals. Shadowing also helps you decide if medicine is the right fit for you while building valuable experiences for future college and medical school applications.
Finding a physician to shadow often starts with taking initiative. Here are a few recommended steps:
-
Start with your network – Ask family, friends, teachers, or mentors if they know any doctors or healthcare professionals who might welcome a student observer.
-
Reach out to local clinics and hospitals – Call or email the volunteer services or medical education office to ask about shadowing policies.
-
Send a professional email – Introduce yourself, explain your interest in medicine, and politely request the opportunity to shadow. Always include your grade level, school, and why you want to shadow.
-
Be flexible and respectful – Understand that not every physician can accept a student, but persistence pays off. Thank them for their time, even if they decline.
-
Follow requirements – Many hospitals require proof of immunizations, HIPAA training, or parental consent. Be ready to complete paperwork.
